History

Paintings from about seven thousand years ago depict scenes from the Stone Age swimming scenes. Swimming is mentioned in Gilgamesh, Iliad, Odyssey, Bible, Beowulf and other prose stories. In 18, German professor Nicholas Weinmann wrote his first book, The Swimmer or a Dialogue on the Art of Swimming.

Competitive swimming, especially breaststroke events, were introduced in Europe in the 1800s. Commemorative coin

The game of swimming has been introduced in coins. In 2003, 10 commemorative coins were issued in gold and silver for the 2004 Summer Olympics in Greece. It depicts the beginning of a female bronze jumper in an ancient bronze sculpture and the scene of a female swimmer jumping out of the water on the other side.

In 2011, a 50 pence coin was minted from the Royal Mint of the United Kingdom to mark the 2012 Summer Olympics. The coin depicts a swimmer on one side and a triathlon on the other.
